Senate ban on cluster bombs fails
This vote is definitely one of the best recent litmus tests for how the U.S. Senate feels about human rights in Iraq and around the world – and what a failure. Senator Stevens’ defense of the bombs basically boils down to “don’t interfere with the military.” Does anyone truly trust the military to uphold human rights any more than they trust corporations?

The Senate on Wednesday rejected a move by Democrats to stop the Pentagon from using cluster bombs near civilian targets and to cut off sales unless purchasers abide by the same rules.
On a 70-30 vote, the Senate defeated an amendment to a Pentagon budget bill to block use of the deadly munitions near populated areas. The vote came after the State Department announced last month that it is investigating whether Israel misused American-made cluster bombs in civilian areas of Lebanon.
Unexploded cluster bombs _ anti-personnel weapons that spray bomblets over a wide area _ litter homes, gardens and highways in south Lebanon after Israel’s 34-day war with Hezbollah militants.

If we can’t rid the world of mines and unexploded submunitions then a neutralizing agent should be introduced in them to make them inert after a determined period.
Battlefields are fluid, once a minefield location or existence is known to opposing forces, they just avoid it. Most of the casualties occur in civilian populations once the war is over or has moved somewhere else.

Now that makes waaaaayyyy too much sense.
yeah, we can put a timer on them..
great idea guys but adding these things to our mines will totaly eat into our profit margin. It would be cheaper to send over a few thousand plastic limbs to the effected areas.
Ever seen C4 burn? You can soak it in gazoline light it up and just watch it burn away. It requires a primary to detonate. But we’re not talking about whole minefields self-destructing themselves in huge fireballs, just a chemical agent that will make the primary unable to detonate.
