Battle In Seattle
Headlines : Iraq
Summary:

According to the Iraqi National Security Adviser, Dr. Mowaffaq Rubai’e, the US army used peace negotiations as a lure in an attempt to assassinate the prominent Shia cleric and militia leader, Muqtada al-Sadr.
Dr. Rubai’e believes that this deception is part of the reason for al-Sadr’s distrust of and enmity towards the American authorities.

While I have no regard for al-Sadr myself, anyone should be able to see that if you try to kill the guy coming to negotiate, you’re probably not going to get a second chance at a peaceful solution.

And we are still interested in peace, right?

Iraqi official claims US used peace negotiations as cover for assassination attempt

The US Army tried to kill or capture Muqtada al-Sadr, the widely revered Shia cleric, after luring him to peace negotiations at a house in the holy city of Najaf, which it then attacked, according to a senior Iraqi government official.

The revelation of this extraordinary plot, which would probably have provoked an uprising by outraged Shia if it had succeeded, has left a legacy of bitter distrust in the mind of Mr Sadr for which the US and its allies in Iraq may still be paying. “I believe that particular incident made Muqtada lose any confidence or trust in the [US-led] coalition and made him really wild,” the Iraqi National Security Adviser Dr Mowaffaq Rubai’e told The Independent in an interview.

The attempted assassination or abduction took place two-and-a-half years ago in August 2004 when Mr Sadr and his Mehdi Army militiamen were besieged by US Marines in Najaf, south of Baghdad.

Dr Rubai’e believes that his mediation efforts – about which he had given the US embassy, the American military command and the Iraqi government in Baghdad full details – were used as an elaborate set-up to entice the Shia leader to a place where he could be trapped.

Secret Plot…............LMAO

Dilated_Rebel @ 05/21/07 14:41:42

if this gets out and spread among the iraqis, it’s gonna be gasoline for sadr’s movement.

they fear me enough to try to kill me, etc.

a_pretty_rainbow @ 05/21/07 16:59:20

Dude, it happened in 2004.
I’m pretty sure they would know already.

VigilantGuardian @ 05/21/07 17:04:59

Thank you Vigilant, at least you have some freaking common sense. I read this headline and compare it to a headline to the likes of “Hitler ordered Jews to death,” or “Gasoline prices mysteriously go up,” or “This just in, Bush is a moron.” None of these would fail to surprise you.

I mean really, who can say that the U.S. secretly wanted to kill Al-Sadr, and be genuinely surprised? God…....

Dilated_Rebel @ 05/21/07 17:35:40

I’m pretty sure they would know already

of course they already know about it. But coverage in the news media of this specific item will help sadr’s movement

a_pretty_rainbow @ 05/21/07 18:11:24

of course they already know about it. But coverage in the news media of this specific item will help sadr’s movement

which is what we don’t want!!! duhhhh!!!

But semi-seriously … it is an interesting tidbit of news just like any.

... the title of this “Headline” is hilarious though (_not quite Comedy Gold hilarious … but pretty funny_ )

Like D_R says … it’s old news and kinda par for the course … back then the military made it CLEAR that Al-Sadr was in the cross hairs.

Now … if this had happened like last week ... then there’d be hell to pay.

CAN’T WE ALL JUST BE FRIENDS!!!

hellcat @ 05/21/07 18:28:06

1) “if this gets out and spread among the iraqis, it’s gonna be gasoline for sadr’s movement.

2) “of course they already know about it. But coverage in the news media of this specific item will help sadr’s movement

So you just invalidated yourself, and most of all, this is old news, esp. for Iraqis. Now my question is, what will Al-Sadrs fate be. Will he flee to Iran, or will he wait the Americans out in Iraq.

We all know Iraq’s heading to major conflict. Whether this will spill over into a major war in the middle east, who knows. But the scariest thing is, perhaps, bear with me plz, maybe Americans are keeping the peace. In large part at least.

Secret Plot

Meaning, the U.S. and Sadr raised the white flag to meet, to negotiate a treaty. Sadr wanted to meet at a house. While Sadr was in-route to the house, American forces attacked the house.

Sounds like a secret plot to me.

dikweed @ 05/22/07 06:08:47

Sounds like a secret plot to me.

LMAO..................again…..

So you’re saying Al-Sadr was stupid enough to think the Americans wanted to sip tea and eat cookies? Maybe the details of the “hit-job” were secret (pretty damn predictable too), but the idea that the Americans wanted not just him, but other clerics dead, IS NO DAMN SECRET....

Dilated_Rebel @ 05/22/07 12:54:39

So you’re saying Al-Sadr was stupid enough to think the Americans wanted to sip tea and eat cookies?

So much for truces, treaties and negotiating peace.

I’m cynical. I’m not that cynical.

Here’s how Democracy Now posted it today . . .

Revealed: U.S. Plotted to Assassinate Moqtada Al-Sadr
In other news from Iraq, the British journalist Patrick Cockburn has revealed explosive details about a secret US plan to kill or capture one of Iraq“s best known Shiite leaders, Moqtada Al-Sadr. According to Cockburn, the U.S. Army tried to carry out the plan two and a half years ago by luring Al-Sadr to peace negotiations at a house in the holy city of Najaf. Iraq“s National Security Adviser said the effects of the U.S. plan is still being felt because it lead to Sadr losing all confidence and trust in the U.S.

A secret US plan

Sadr, stupid? No. The U.S. burned the bridge of peace. That’s stupid.

dikweed @ 05/22/07 13:22:17

dikweed- Sadr, stupid? No. The U.S. burned the bridge of peace. That’s stupid.

Only assuming that peace is what they’re actually interested in…

On Edit: I will never understand how people keep looking at Iraq and saying that the U.S. Gov’t is incompetent and stupid in the way they are handling things.

To assume this is to presuppose that they went into Iraq to create a functional Democracy, led by the Iraqi people for the benefit of the Iraqi people, and accidentally messed up.

And that’s a bit too much of a stretch for me…

Truthcansuk @ 05/22/07 13:28:43

the only thing surprising about it is the fact that the U.S. bombers didn’t take out the entire neighborhood while they were at it, just to make sure..

a_pretty_rainbow @ 05/22/07 13:46:59

and the roads leading up to the house, and the bridges, and..what are we missing?

a_pretty_rainbow @ 05/22/07 13:48:53

Only assuming that peace is what they’re actually interested in

I don’t see peace as the issue. Since the dawn of history, the idea of a truce, negotiating for peace, has presumed that your enemy would abide by certain rules (i.e. not kill negotiators). The U.S. government wears another badge of barbarism, IMO.

dikweed @ 05/22/07 13:49:20

“??Sadr, stupid? No. The U.S. burned the bridge of peace. That’s stupid.??”

Words of wisdom….

Im with Truth, who the hell thinks they wanted to create a real democracy? For god-sakes!!! America doesn’t have a real democracy.

I think the Americans thought it would be a cake-walk to the oil fields, to the economic domination of Iraq. That they have been surprised by the Iraqi resistance towards imperialism is astonishing.

I give those Iraqi’s credit, who would have belived that Iraqi militias would have so many willing suicide bombers?? I think that is surprising in it self.
