Transvestite Dancers Cheer Islamist Setback
Musharraf is not the only loser in the recent elections in Pakistan. Islamist religious dominance is also being challenged in many areas. Will cultural traditions reemerge in Pakistan with the defeat of some of the conservative religious candidates?
Eunuchs and cross-dressers have traditionally played an important role in the culture of the Pashtuns, the main ethnic group in Pakistan’s North-Western Frontier Province, and in the southern half of Afghanistan.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — In one of the more unexpected outcomes of Pakistan’s election last week, Leila the drag queen scored a big win.
Leila, the stage name of a 30-year-old man named Adel, wasn’t running for office. But the popular dancer had a big stake in the election results in this mountainous province on the Afghan frontier. Voters here last Monday threw out an Islamist administration that had cracked down on the arts.

Hmm. After watching that music video, I think I’m switching to the Islamist camp on this one.
Although, come to think of it, I too have become far less pretty since the mullahs took power.
I’m sorry. I thought this was an intelligent forum not a freak show. I believe in freedom of speech but let’s keep it adult. If I want a supermarket rag I’ll go read Provda.
ow..

I’d like see more rights for women in these Islamic nations, including allowing women to take some of the roles in theatre and the other performing arts, where Islamic men have traditionally played some or all of the female parts. But, under some of the stricter Islamic district governments, even all music has been banned: Religious subculture v. broader traditional culture.
I presented this particular alley of conflict telescoped in the current article for academic purposes, precisely the tension between the contemporary subcultural politico-religious ascendence in some predominantly Islamic nations and these nations own traditional subcultural patterns. Some of the current Islamic movements are not just in conflict with Western beliefs, attitudes and conduct, and are not just a schism of ancient Islam warring between Shia and Sunni. There are also a lot of issues facing Islam, especially gender issues and personal freedom issues, and, perhaps surprisingly, the rather conservative WSJ, gives us an interesting, kind of alternative media look at one of these areas.
it appears some ‘westerners’ have misogynistic trans-gender issues as well, not that i particularly care for the company of eunuchs
and yes, lot, i found it interesting that wsj would print such a provocative piece…
