Summary:

Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids continue across the United States, spreading terror amongst immigrant communities, dividing families and hampering union organizing drives.

This latest raid, one of the largest ever, came at Iowa’s Agriprocessors Inc, one of the world’s largest Kosher slaughterhouses. Such raids are by now commonplace, with thousands of immigrants rounded up every year. Very few corporate officials are prosecuted.

Local residents in the town of Postville are appalled, with one local shopkeeper commenting to the local paper that “If they took all the people that they say they took, they literally killed this town” while husbands and wives of the abducted gathered at local churches to wait for news of their loved ones, some of whom may never return.

The round-ups continue...

In one of the largest ever government dragnets against immigrant workers, federal agents swooped down upon a meatpacking plant in northeastern Iowa Monday, rounding up nearly 400 workers.

Heavily armed squads of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, backed by state and local police, stormed Agriprocessors Inc. in Postville, Iowa, the largest kosher slaughterhouse in the world, while two government helicopters hovered overhead.

In all, 16 local, state and federal agencies were involved in the raids, which had been prepared for months.

Most of those arrested were from either Mexico or Guatemala, while some others were immigrants from Israel and Ukraine.

JC, what language are you speaking?

Funny how the whte employers found the “loop-hole” and avoided persecution.

However, in recent raids around the Los Angeles area, where many business owners are not white but Latino, are finding themselves locked-up or facing fines.

Is it a race issue? nah…

Here was a population, low-class and mostly foreign, hanging always on the verge of starvation, and dependent for its opportunities of life upon the whim of men every bit as brutal and unscrupulous as the old-time slave drivers; under such circumstances immorality was exactly as inevitable, and as prevalent, as it was under the system of chattel slavery. Things that were quite unspeakable went on there in the packing houses all the time, and were taken for granted by everybody; only they did not show, as in the old slavery times, because there was no difference in color between master and slave.
