British PM Warns of Global Oil "Shock" as Fuel Price Protests Spread

London – British Prime Minister Gordon Brown warned Wednesday that the world faced an era-defining oil “shock” that required urgent action, as European leaders argued how best to contain protests over soaring fuel prices.

“It is now understood that a global shock on this scale requires global solutions,” Brown wrote in The Guardian newspaper.

Record oil prices of around 135 dollars a barrel have contributed to protests worldwide over the rise in fuel and food costs, with fishermen and truck drivers taking the lead in Europe, blocking ports and road access to oil depots.

“However much we might wish otherwise, there is no easy answer to the global oil problem without a comprehensive international strategy,” Brown said, adding that the problem should be made a “top priority” at the EU summit next month and the gathering of G8 leaders in July.

“The way we confront these issues will define our era,” he said.

Brown’s warning came a day after French President Nicolas Sarkozy urged a Europe-wide cut in consumer taxes on fuel.

it’s the end of the world as we know it…

Sharpen up the guillotines. What worked for the French aristocracy (they don’t have kings anymore) will be a more than ample instrument for eliminating oil barons and bureaucrats. Off with their heads!
It will make “Survivor” seem like “Sweating to the Oldies” by comparison, altho not really a popcorn-type of show, at least for some.

which would change what?

which would change what?

the price gauging

no, it wouldn’t. And “price gouging” is a stupid, meaningless phrase.

killing a few people in positions like that would ensure only to replace them. You want to change a system you don’t bother with such idiocy.

Go study history a bit better

I can’t spell it but I’m pretty sure it has a meaning.

Kill them too. There’s an overpopulation problem, right?

SaryshaganTiger @ 05/30/08 04:37:27

“I can’t spell it but I’m pretty sure it has a meaning.”

Yeah, I think it’s defined as “capitalism”. Hope that clears things up.

well i think that oil is underpriced. bottled water costs more, and so does coffee. so why do we bitch when one of the most useful liquids on the planet starts costing a realistic price. the only error is our dependence on oil.

/me shakes his head in utter amazement….literalists, ya gotta love ‘em

Good news everyone (Professor Farnsworth voice)! Beer is now cheaper than gasoline. So, drink up!

A system is only as good as the people who run it but going around killing all the persons involved is not the cure either. It’s like throwing the baby out with the dirty bath water. When Nicolae, Valentin (the Son) and Elana Ceau?escu where tried for crimes against the people of Romania, Valentin was not executed. Why? The Romanian people did not want to kill a man who did not deserve death. This has always been the problem of man and his institutes: No-one wants to really think things through.

Famous quotes that I can’t by into: “Kill them all. Let God sort them out.”, “ Let them eat cake.”, “We don’t do body counts” – Tommy Franks, “The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic – Stalin, and (My Favorite) “Palestinians are like lice. You have to take them out like lice.” – Ze’evy.

P.S. May Rehavam Ze’evi rot in hell right next to Adolph Hitler. Let the punishment fit the crime.

n1…..priorities, gotta have ‘em ;)

Cars don’t run on bottled water or coffee.

EGisJUICE @ 05/30/08 13:04:16

this has to happen. humans will not change directions when times are good. as a herd we are too short-sighted for that. we change when there is absolutely no way we can keep doing what we’re doing. in order to get the world to imagine a world without oil the situation needs to get worse. it is going to hurt, but hopefully we can come out the other side in a better situation. there is of course the possibility of the oil wars. fun times.

ps. those who cannot change will not survive.
